Background: Georg Vandenburgh and Amelia Himmel bore their first and only child, Eric, during a time of turmoil. Amelia Himmel was human, and knowingly married Georg Vandenburgh, even though he was a mutant. She loved him and accepted him for who he was. Although, her parents did not. When they discovered that their daughter had not only married a mutant, but concieved a child with one, they were shocked and hurt. They had assumed that Amelia would understand their wishes that she marry a human. They saw it as a direct insult and disobediance to their wishes.
It was during this time of banishment from his maternal grandparents, that Eric was born. His parents loved and doted on him. Life was peaceful and quiet for them for several years, but life as they knew it was shattered beyond repair one fateful night. His maternal grandparents had disowned their daughter, but they had not forgotten about her, or their only grandson. Instead, they had gone about trying to find a way to get Georg out of their lives.
It took many years, and many lies, but eventually the government stepped in. The encouragement from Amelia's parents was the only excuse they needed to determine that Georg was abusive to his wife and child. The HILE took Georg away and locked him in a cell until he could stand trial. Amelia didn't know what had happened to him, and even though she was the supposed victim, she was not asked to testify at his trial.
Amelia's health took a turn a few months later. Her parents stepped back into the picture, offering their help and their facade of sympathy. When Eric was 7, he and his mother moved in with them. And it was from this point on that Eric's mind would be poisoned with the lies about mutants that had gotten his father arrested, detained, and thrown in jail without a proper trial. As his mother's health progressively declined, Eric spent more and more time with his doting grandparents. They managed to convince him that his father really had been a horrible person who deserved to be in jail.
And Eric came to hate his father. He hated him for what he was, and what he had supposedly done. He hated him for abandoning them, and he hated them for the way his mother had begun to deteriorate. Soon, his father was being blamed for everything that ever went wrong in the young man's life. And when Eric was 11 years old, he discovered another thing he could blame on his father.
He had been walking through the mall with his grandfather when he first noticed the change. He didn't know how it had happened, or why. And it scared him too much to say anything to anyone. But as he passed a man in the mall, he felt a power surge through him, like he had been electrocuted. And then he found that he could look through things. Solid things. Like walls, statues and people. In time, he found that he could absorb the powers of other mutants and keep them. He never depleted anyone's power, he just took it on himself. Mimicking it, echoing it. And he found that he could hold many powers at a time. But when he got too greedy, he discovered that some of the powers were gone.
When Eric was 15, his mother passed away. She had just grown progressively more ill over the years. There was no explanation. The doctor's said she just didn't have the will to live. Embittered even further against his father, the boy determined that he would find him and kill him if he wasn't dead already. He learned to control his power, to hone and fine tune it. He learned his range, and his limitiations. He also hid it from his grandparents. Knowing how they felt about mutants, he knew it was best to just keep it to himself.
He saw his powers as a means to an end. He never saw himself as one of the filthy mutants he and his grandparents hated so much. When he graduated from college, he went to work for the HILE. He showed amazing aptitude for finding mutants. He was put to work as a spy after he foiled every mutant detector test known to the HILE. Believing he was human, the HILE dispatched him on their most important cases, and he never failed them. He always found who he was looking for.
Now, 8 years later, he has been assigned to find the King's Ransom and destroy it.
